We asked Francesca
As International Women's Day approaches, let's take a moment to honor the fierce and determined women who are leaving their mark in the world of sports. From breaking records to overcoming challenges, these women embody both strength and grace as they strive for excellence.
Can you share your journey in the sport you play and what inspired you to take it up?
I started cycling when I was 7 years old, just for having fun in the nature, because I loved to play in the outside. My dream as a young girl riding her bike was to wear the Italian National Team jersey during an important race: it happened in 2021 in the World Championship and I’m really proud of it!
How have you faced and overcome challenges as a woman in your sport?
Cycling made me stronger during past years, both physically and mentally. It’s a sport in which you have to be resilient, every day you’re face-to-face with your insecurities and fears, but it makes you so proud when you achieve your goals. I’m stubborn, so I don’t give up trying to reach my objectives and, obviously, enjoying the ride!
Which women has been your biggest inspiration and why?
here are two amazing women and champions I admire a lot: Jolanda Neff and Evie Richards. They are amazing in and out of a race, both as athlete and person, sharing the ups of being a successful woman in this sport, with kindness and joy, but also all the downs we have to face in this amazing journey.
What advice would you give to young girls who want to get into sports?
My advice is “find what you enjoy the most, without fear of judgments or critics, because there will always be someone ready to be rude with you.. you just keep going and enjoy the ride, following your own dreams”!
